Fairbanks to Deanli to Anchorage

Left Fairbanks around 7:30 this morning and headed toward Denali and Anchorage on Hwy 3, the George Parks Highway.  I stropped in Nenana (pronounced:  Nee-nay-ah with the accent on the second syllable). The state Railroad museum is located there:

Unfortunately, the outside is about as good as it gets, 'cause there wasn't much worth looking at inside.  Nenana is also home to the Nenana Ice Classic:

The town runs a lottery each year to guess when the ice breaks up on the Tanana River that runs past the town.  This year's winners (eight of them) shared $279,030.  Interesting enough, Nenana was also the place from which diptheria vaccine was shipped by sled dog to Nome in 1925...the event that started the Iditarod annual sled dog race.

On to Denali, about another 50 miles down the road.  Once again, the scenery is impressive:

Didn't get to stay long in Denali and headed for Anchorage (once again, in the rain) around 1:00 pm or so.  Arrived in Anchorage around 7:30 this evening.  Miles today:  384.  Total: 5,421.

Tomorrow, headed down toward Seward to see the Glacier Fields.
