Anchorage, Alaska to Tok, Alaska

Left Anchorage around 7:30 this morning to cloudy skies, brisk temperatures, but no rain!  The Glenn Hiway, Alaska Route 1, connects Anchorage with the Alaska Hiway at Tok, about 300 miles in total.  At Glennallen, Alaska, about halfway up the Glenn Hiway, there is a turnoff to go to Valdez, site of the famous oil spill of 1989.

The route goes through the Talkeetna Mountains between Anchorage and Glennallen, and some of the scenery is pretty fantastic:

This shot overlooks the Matanuska River, about 30 miles north of Palmer, AK.

The shot above is also of the Matanuska River, about 20 miles further up the road.

Rounding a bend in the road a few miles further, I came upon the Matanuska Glacier, that was visible from the road for about 15 miles or so:

All this was south of Glennallen.  After Glennallen, the terrain got a little flatter, but about 60 miles south of Tok, I came to an area where you could see the Mentasta Mountains off in the distance:

I'm starting to run out of adjectives to describe the scenery up here, but at times, it's breathtaking.

Started to rain about 20 miles south of Tok.  I don't know what I would do without rain.  Anyway, got to Tok about 4:00 pm and will be heading to Haines Junction, Yukon tomorrow.  Miles today:  326.  Total: 5,977.
