July 3, 2010

Sheboygan, WI to Manitowoc, WI to Hurley, WI.
Went to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, WI first thing this morning.  A pretty small, local museum, but a wealth of information about Great Lakes shipbuilding (Manitowoc was a ship-building center back in the day) and expecially about 28 Gato-class submarines built there during WWII.  Got to tour the submarine with a guide who was very knowledgable and able to answer all kinds of excellent questions.  The museum was very enjoyable and I'd rate it an 8 out of 10 for sure.  Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pictures inside the Museum.  Left Manitowoc about 11:30 and headed up to Green Bay (smaller city than I expected) and then up US141 to Iron Mountain, MI where I picked up US2 West over to Hurley, WI for the night.  US2 was very remote and went through heavily forested areas for miles at a time.  Rolling terrain, with long, gradual rises and falls in the landscape.  I guess the glaciers did a number on whatever mountains might have been here 15,000 years ago.  Spent the night in Hurley, WI and on to Duluth, MN and then Grand Forks, ND tomorrow.  Miles today:  312  To Date:  1,218.

Interesting roadside plaque alont US141 between Green Bay, WI and Iron Mountain, MI.  Midway between the North Pole and the Equator, but why wouldn't that be at 45 degrees latitude exactly?

US2 between Iron River and Wakefield, MI

Same spot, opposite direction.  I stood here for at least 10 minutes and saw two cars and one motorcycle pass by!
