Havre, MT to Glacier National Park and Kalispell, MT

Got a break on the weather today.  Left Havre around 7:30 and headed west on US2. Within about 20 miles of Havre (pronounced "Haav-er" by the locals), you could start to see mountains off in the distance toward the south.  As best as I can tell from the map, these are the Bears Paw Mountains.

Continued on and stopped at Cut Bank, MT at the Glacier County Historical Museum...ask me anything about Glacier County, MT and I'll make something up!  This next picture is about 10 miles west of Cut Bank and if you look closely, you can see the Rockies in the distance (to the west).

Went on about 30 miles on US2 to Browning, MT and then up US89 to St. Mary and Glacier National Park.  I took the Going-to-the-Sun Road through the park, and it was spectacular.  Pat and I had been to Glacier in 1981 or 1982 when we lived in Denver, but I guess I had forgotten how awesome the park is.
The picture above is of St. Mary Lake, right inside the east entrance to the park.  The lake is about 10 miles long and almost 300 feet deep.

Going to the Sun Road was under reconstruction in three places over about a 10 mile stretch (looked to me like avalanche damage), so the going was slow, but the views were unbelievable.  Here are a couple:

(The white stuff is snow)

From somewhere high on the road.  We went all the way down  into the valley.

If you look at this one, what you're seeing is the road itself.  The sections under construction were unpaved with no guardrails.

And, finally, here is a view of Lake MacDonald, on the west end of Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Had a great afternoon  in the park.  Words cannot describe how beautiful the scenery is and how spectacular the mountains are.  Left the park and rode to Kalispell, MT for the night.  Miles today:  283.  Total:  2,553.
